Benefits of Castor Oil for Stronger and Healthier Hair

We often hear about the amazing benefits of castor oil in many areas, from beauty  to general health.  Its properties have been known for many centuries.
In ancient Egypt, castor oil was used to treat eye irritation or even to stimulate labour for pregnant women. But for Cleopatra, castor oil was her favourite oil to remove make-up.
Nowadays, castor oil is used in many ways and particularly in beauty products. If we talk about hair, it is believed this nourishing oil promotes hair growth. But is it true? Let’s find out more about castor oil and its benefits on hair.

About Castor Oil

Castor oil is extracted from the seeds (castor beans), which grow on the plant called Ricinus Communis. The plant grows in tropical regions like in Africa, India and even Mediterranean Basin.

Castor oil  has a pale to light yellow colour with is viscous consistency and  a distinctive smell. In terms of composition, it  is rich in fatty acids, mainly in ricinoleic acid, as well as vitamin E.

Thanks to its anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial and moisturising properties, castor oil is used in pharmaceutical industry, cosmetics and medicine.

Castor oil’s Benefits on hair

  • Moisturised and stronger hair

Castor oil is a fantastic oil to strengthen hair due to its nourishing and moisturising properties. The fatty acids in the oil act as humectant, meaning they attract water to the hair so it helps to retain moisture.  For this reasons, dry or damaged hair particularly benefit from castor oil’s moisturising properties.

  • Smooth and shiny hair

When castor oil is applied frequently, it coats and lubricates the hair shafts making hair smooth and shiny leading to more flexibility and less breakage.

  •  Healthy Hair and Scalp

Dandruff

Castor oil can be your best ally to get healthier hair from roots until ends.
Thanks to its  anti-inflammatory properties, castor oil can prevent dandruff due to a dry or flaky scalp. Because the oil is quite thick, it is advised to mix castor oil with a lighter oil, such as avocado, olive or almond oil. Mix the oils, then apply and massage scalp with it to get rid of dandruff before shampooing your hair.

Dry or damaged hair
If you hair is dry or damaged and you want to revitalise and nourish it, using castor oil as a pre-poo  or hot oil treatment can be really beneficial.
Apply the mix of oils on your hair and ideally leave it overnight for deeper action. Then follow with your wash day routine the next day.

Split Ends

Finally, castor oil can prevent split ends to travel all the way up the hair shaft.  Apply the mix of oils with castor oil on your ends for few minutes before washing off.
